Diesel Performance Issues
Is your diesel vehicle experiencing one of these performance issues?
- Rough operation – runs poorly, especially when the engine is cold
- Hard to start – requires extended cranking
- Sudden decrease in fuel economy / MPG
- Unexplained coolant loss
- Overheating while driving
- Visible diesel exhaust smoke (see below)
Visible Diesel Exhaust
Is your diesel exhaust trying to tell you something? Well-running diesel vehicles – especially newer diesel cars and trucks – do not produce visible smoke from their exhaust. If you see smoke coming out of your diesel exhaust, something is not right.
Black Diesel Smoke indicates incomplete combustion. Black diesel exhaust can be caused by a dirty air cleaner, incorrect pump timing, or dirty or worn fuel injectors.
Blue Diesel Smoke suggests burning oil, which means oil is finding its way *into* your cylinders. (It doesn’t belong there.) Blue diesel smoke generally indicates a worn engine part or seal, or a worn or failing turbocharger.
White Diesel Smoke might mean coolant is leaking into your combustion chamber, or a leaking head gasket.
