Signs and Symptoms of Air Conditioner Trouble
A/C Making a Strange Noise
You know what your A/C is supposed to sound like. If you turn on your air conditioner and hear an unusual squeal, rattle, vibration, or clunk, you should turn it off until you can get the system professionally serviced. Those sounds could mean a problem with your air conditioner’s compressor. Continuing to use it could cause serious damage that is more expensive to repair.
A/C Blowing Hot Air
An air conditioner that is not blowing cold air could be caused by a clogged valve or a failing compressor. But if the blower (fan) is working well, and the air never gets cool, your system is most likely low on refrigerant.
Automotive air conditioners are closed systems. If refrigerant is escaping, you’ve got a leak, and we need to find it and fix it. If we just add more refrigerant, it will leak out again and your A/C will stop working again.
A/C Not Blowing Enough Air
Low air-flow can be caused by many different things:
- failing blower fan
- dirty cabin air filter
- mold or mildew build-up in your evaporator core
- motorized vent failure
- electrical or computer control failure
A/C Has a Strange Smell
Several things can cause a bad smell to come out of your air conditioner vents. Clogs or insufficient air flow can allow water to accumulate. If you do not fix this problem, mold will grow, and the smell will blow into your vehicle.
Many vehicles now have a cabin air filter, in addition to the larger engine air filter. Your should replace your cabin air filter every year. A clogged or dirty cabin air filter can also cause a bad smell.
Strange A/C smells should be investigated and repaired before they permanently seep into your vehicle’s interior, lessening its value.
How Does Your Vehicle A/C Work?
Your vehicle’s air conditioner cools and dehumidifies your cabin’s air by circulating a chemical refrigerant through a series of mechanical components. The A/C fan then blows air across the chilled tubes into your cabin. Your vehicle A/C continuously pressurizes and cools the refrigerant as it circulates, removing the heat and humidity from your vehicle’s cabin.
Automotive Air Conditioner Components
- Compressor: pumps refrigerant into the Condenser.
- Condenser: compresses the refrigerant into a cold liquid.
- Expansion valve: lowers the system pressure so the refrigerant can become a cold vapor.
- Evaporator: cold refrigerant travels through the Evaporator coils. Then the blower fan pushes warm air across the cold coils, and cold air is blown into your cabin.
The refrigerant warms as it absorbs the heat from your cabin. It travels back into the Compressor and the whole process starts again.

These guys were great. I pulled into town in the middle of a TX summer with no AC. They found room for me on the schedule the very next day and just like that, I had (blessed!) air conditioning. They were friendly, took the time to educate me about my car’s issues, and gave me a ride while my car was getting work done. I highly recommend their services.

We were experiencing a progressive problem with the A/C not cooling well. Call Excalibur and spoke with Brad. He advised to bring it in and they would take a look. No scheduling an appointment, no drop it off, no BS, just a straight yes we are busy but we will work you in. Upon arrival I met Brad(for the first time) and he stated just a minute and i get a service technician. Almost immediately i was greeted by the technician. After discussing the problem he took the vehicle. Approximately and hour later he was back advised the problem was relatively minor, that the A/C was now cooling properly and he was done. The next pleasant surprise came when I was told the amount of the bill. I was very pleased and will use them in the future.
